Quote: | For the first time, scientists have captured footage of a laser's rapid flight path.
The incredible video was taken using an ultra-high-speed camera capable of detecting single particles of light.
During filming, Scottish researchers recorded two million laser pulses over a 10 minute period, as individual particles – known as photons – collided with the air.
'This is the first time we've looked at light just passing by,' lead researcher Genevieve Gariepy at Heriot Watt University told The Verge.
She explained that usually, scientists can only see light when it reflects off other objects, or when smoke gas is blown over it.
Seeing the light from lasers is even trickier as the photons are move in a focused beam, and in the same direction.
The digital compact-sized camera recorded at a resolution of 1024 pixels, and is the first of its kind in terms of portability to be used in laser research.
It was made up of a 32 by 32 grid of detectors that recorded the time a photon arrived at them at a rate of 20 billion frames a second.
The camera was arranged so that it could film a side-on view of a laser firing at series of mirrors, according to a report in the New Scientist. |
