It is my opinion that this is non-issue. MMP's suddenly are stopped when samples are immersed in oil, and don't seem to have much affect when teeth have not been sliced up. It is my opinion that bond strengths deteriorate through hydrolytic degradation and really nothing else.

Isn't it also that Surpass 1 is so acidic that it denatures the MMP's? Or are you speaking in general, even mentioning the self-etching bonds with less acidic primers?

PS: I don't use oil in my cavities Cool

just took a course on bonding with Byong Sah from Bisco, MMP's are enzymes activated by acid that consume collagen/hybrid layer

To inhibit this activity use 2% Chlohexidine or Benzalkonium chloride prior to bonding agent application It just so happens that Bisco has a patent on acid etch with BAC.

I am wondering if it is wise to use the CHX to prior to using the Surpass, with self etch systems (ie ones that you do not rinse off the etch) he suggests to let the CHX dwell for 30 seconds prior to bonding.

there's 2% chlorhexidine in the consepsis scrub...

however, what john is saying is that he doesnt believe MMPs are an issue in vivo...

John: how about your other theory that MMPs are neutralized when the pH is below 1?

That's actually Pashley's claim, and if that's accurate there's nothing to worry about since Surpass 1 and Simplicity 1 have a pH well below 1.

I still don't buy it.

Cus

We have 3 year bond strength stability data on Surpass and it's perfect without CHX.

The data showing the alleged effects of MMP's is really dependent on how the samples are prepared and stored.
